  8.       BACKGROUND
  9.       
  10.       Stacker 4.0's SmartPack provides the best real-time disk
  11.       compression available.  When you create a new Stacker drive, or
  12.       convert a Stacker drive from a previous version, you are taking
  13.       advantage of  SmartPack. This method trades off speed for the
  14.       best compression. The Stacker Toolbox provides the ability for
  15.       you to tune your computer for fastest speed vs. best compression.
  16.       It also provides a tool, the Optimizer, that allows you
  17.       periodically recompress your drive. These two tools provide a
  18.       great deal of flexibility in tuning your computer for the best
  19.       overall performance.

  23.           - Determine your requirements for speed vs. compression.
  24.           - Make selections from the Stacker Toolbox to meet your
  25.             requirements.

  27.       Determine your requirements for speed vs. compression
  28.       
  29.       You must decide whether you wish to use the Stacker Toolbox to
  30.       tune your computer for maximum speed or maximum compression based
  31.       on your system's overall performance and your need for disk
  32.       space. Stacker provides the flexibility to make use of maximum
  33.       speed during day-to-day operations, while periodically optimizing
  34.       your drive to get the best compression. Utilizing this strategy
  35.       you would use the Stacker Toolbox to select MaxSpeed. But you
  36.       would also regularly use the Optimize tool to recompress your
  37.       drive selecting the MaxSpace option.

  39.       Make selections from the Stacker Toolbox to meet your
  40.       requirements

  42.       From Windows:
  43.       
  44.        1.  Open the Stacker Toolbox and click on the "tune" button.
  45.        2.  Select the speed setting you desire. Select MaxSpeed for the
  46.            fastest performance.
  47.        3.  When Optimizing your Stacker drive, click on the Optimize
  48.            button in the Stacker Toolbox.
  49.        4.  Select the optimization method you desire. To get the best
  50.            compression select Full-MaxSpace.

  52.       From DOS:
  53.       
  54.        1.  Type STAC at the DOS prompt.
  55.        2.  Select Stacker Tuner from the menu.
  56.        3.  Select the speed setting you desire. "Fastest speed and
  57.            standard compression" is the equivalent of MaxSpeed in
  58.            Windows.
  59.        4.  When Optimizing the drive, select Stacker Optimizer from the
  60.            main menu.
  61.        5.  Select the compression method desired. "Full-MaxSpace" gives
  62.            you the best compression.

  64.       Remember that you only need to set the Tuner one time. Your
  65.       computer will operate at that speed setting from then on, unless
  66.       you change the setting. You should periodically run the Stacker
  67.       Optimizer when your fragmentation level gets too high, or you
  68.       wish to recompress the drive for best compression.
